The PSB
symbol was designed by Ms Ramneek Majithia, Faculty, Communication Design, at
Pearl Academy of Fashion and her team of students. We provided a brief to the
students about the Pearl School of Business, highlighting the need to reflect
the entrepreneurial spirit.
What do we mean by the entrepreneurial spirit? To venture out, to break path, to
think out of box, toexperience the exhilarating space for freedom and to
explore.
The students produced some designs as a part of their assignment. Then we short
listed and discussed further refinements. We added the dimension of Indianness
in the Global setting.
What is Indianness? There is some sanctity attached to wealth in our tradition,
as symbolized in the form of Goddess Laxmi. There are also festivals associated
with acquiring wealth and celebrating the harvest, like Dussera and Diwali. We
continue to follow these traditions in the globalised world. So we wanted some
depiction of it.
The final logo reflects several dimensions. The orange represents Energy from
within and the Grey to us is the offering in the form of goods and services.
The offerings come from an out-of-box thinking, which itself is an outcome of
great energy. Together, they seem to cover the entire globe as suggested by the
rounding of the foray. At the end of the venture are two dots in orange, which
represent the arrival of wealth. Traditionally, this is how women propitiate
the Goddess Laxmi by showing her footprints into the house.
You can also see the P reflected in the logo, representing Pearl and the House
of Pearl. The logo is also modern in its design, showing that in PSB tradition
and modernity are not separate but strengthen each other continuously. We
consulted some senior managers in the House of Pearl and the trustees of Little
People Education Society about the alternatives and there was near-unanimity of
opinion about the logo of choice. So it was easy to adopt it and present it to
the public on 14 April 2006 at the time of signing of the Memorandum of
Understanding with Babson College. This ceremony was held in New Delhi at which
Prof Michael Fetters, Provost, Babson College was the Guest of Honour along
with Prof Ashok Rao of Babson College.
